Anti-vaping crusader Glantz accused of sexual harassment

Vaping’s public enemy number one is facing an uncertain future — due to an all-too-familiar issue. Prof. Stanton Glantz has been accused of sexual harassment by a postdoctoral researcher who Glantz supervised at the University of California-San Francisco.

Eunice Neeley has filed a lawsuit against the University of California Board of Regents alleging that the university created a hostile work environment by allowing harassment based on sex, according to a story in the Daily Californian. She also claims that the university failed to prevent the harassment, and allowed Glantz to use his position to retaliate against her when she complained.

The story was featured on the front page of Wednesday’s Daily Californian, the student-run newspaper at the University of California-Berkeley, which is just across the Bay from San Francisco. The Daily Californian article has a copy of the lawsuit included. The story has also been reported by Buzzfeed.

Neeley’s lawsuit says that Glantz engaged in a pattern of harassing behavior, both toward her and other women in the department. “Professor Glantz abused his authority and prestige at UCSF and sexually harassed Neeley, and other female subordinates, and subjected them to misogynistic and racially insensitive behavior,” the lawsuit states.

In addition to the sexual harassment charges, Glantz is accused of removing Neeley’s name from a paper she wrote, and inserting his own name as lead author. Neeley says that was done in retaliation for reporting his conduct and asking the university for a new mentor and supervisor.

Neeley also says that Glantz has told other students that having the job security of academic tenure at UCSF meant “you can rape the Vice Chancellor’s daughter and still have a job,” according to the lawsuit.

According to Neeley’s complaint, the university didn’t protect her and other female employees from Glantz, and she was “forced to leave.” She left UCSF in June of this year. She claims the events at the university have caused her emotional and physical distress.

“It is our goal that this lawsuit sends a message that sexual harassment is unacceptable in the 21st century, in every industry,” attorney Kelly Armstrong, who is representing Neeley, told Buzzfeed.

Glantz is an internationally famous anti-smoking activist who has led the prohibitionist wing of the tobacco control movement in the U.S. for decades. He has also been among the loudest and most persistent anti-vaping crusaders, writing or collaborating on a number of studies that have been called out for terrible methodology and reasoning. Glantz is the principal investigator of the Tobacco Center of Regulatory Science (TCORS) at UCSF. It is one of the 14 TCORS established by the FDA and NIH as part of the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act.
