No, you are not experiencing déjà vu. This mod is nearly identical to the OSUB Plus. The main differences being that the Plus edition only did 80 Watts, and had an internal 3300 mAh battery.

The OSUB is back in a big way. Now it’s all grown up, and runs on dual 18650 cells. It can put out 220 Watts, as the name suggests. That’s more than double the amount of power as before. Like the original OSUB devices, it’s fully capable of temperature control. (If you’re into that sort of thing.)

SMOK is a company that never rests. They are constantly improving, or shall I say improvising on their pre-existing designs. Today we have a look at the OSUB King, the latest mod in the OSUB lineup. The full kit comes with the TFV8 Big Baby tank, but today we will just be focusing on the mod itself.

You’re probably just as confused as I am. Why would SMOK bother to create another 220 W mod when their original Alien mod is still flying off the shelves? Who knows what goes on at these board meetings. Their slogan for this one is “For vaping heyday”. Still lost? Let’s try to make sense of this.

On their website, they use a font that reminds me of “Back to the Future”. (If you’ve never seen that movie, stop reading this and watch it now.) As the name suggests, SMOK went “back in time” to take one of their popular devices, and “futurize” it. The OSUB, which was popular for its diminutive size, is now playing with the big boys. Who is this mod even for? Let’s get to the bottom of this nonsense…

Form factor

The SMOK OSUB series excels in ergonomics. Unlike the original OSUBs, the King isn’t exactly lightweight. But it’s contoured shape is a pleasure to hold. I have rather small hands and it easily rests in my palm. The mod is almost double the width of the Alien, but is a bit shorter in stature.

The finish

That paintjob though. The OSUB King has more of an automotive type of finish reminiscent of a brand-new car. If you’re into cars, it will probably tickle your fancy. It even reminds me of a brand new electric guitar or bass. The red one especially looks like the body of a candy-red Fender Strat.

How will it hold up? So far, no issues, but it is SMOK. And we all know about the great Alien fiasco… Only time will tell. I will say that it was rather easy scratching off a piece with my key from the inner compartment. But then again, it’s also easy to do that on any car, if you’ve ever had your car keyed.

Usability

Using it is super easy. You squeeze it, and it fires. Just like the Alien, the Predator and the hundreds of other vape mods that are now coming standard with this type of firing mechanism. Once you get used to it, you’ll be squeezing all your other mods out of habit.

The wattage adjustment buttons remind me of little pearls embedded into the device. They’re easy to locate and have a nice click to them. Just below you have your Micro USB charging port. The battery door uses a latch-system. No issues opening and closing it to change out my batteries.

Menu system/screen

If you’ve ever used a SMOK product in the last year, you’re more than half way there. Three clicks to access the menu. Then you have your standard menu functions: Mode, Puff count, Initial Ohm adjustment, TCR, Screen menu and Power ON/Off. Nothing new, just your typical SMOK interface.

The screen is bright and easy to read, reminiscent of your standard DNA-style devices.

Like every OSUB mod, the wattage adjustment buttons are reversed, for whatever reason. (The upper adjustment button will lower your wattage, while the lower one increases it.) Luckily you have the option of rotating the screen. Once you do that, the up and down buttons make a lot more sense.

Verdict

If you need a high-wattage mod that’s simple and attractive, this is it. Let’s say you already own an OSUB, but are itching for more power and battery life, then go for it. If you already have an Alien, it doesn’t make sense as to why you would need this. But if you’re already in love with the form factor of the OSUB, then it makes perfect sense to upgrade to the King. Oh, I just can’t wait to be king…
