Vapefly has been having a lot of success with their MTL devices lately. They broke new ground with the Galaxies RDA and they’ve now added a rebuildable tank version of this popular atomizer to their line-up. It has a lot of the same great features that made the best RTAs like the Siren 2, Ares and Berserker Mini, so popular with MTLers. The tank offers tons of flexibility and options for a highly customizable draw.

Build quality and design
The Galaxies MTL RTA is 22.2 mm in diameter and just under 50 mm in height, a little bit taller than the Berserker Mini. It holds up to 5 mL of e-juice with the included bubble glass. The straight glass tube holds 3 mL and the 2 mL edition utilizes a removable plug, which is a very clever TPD hack. The atomizer looks like a crossbreed between the Merlin MTL, Ares and Berserker Mini. It also features tiny round inlays and a line going around the base. The included drip tips look like the ones that come with the Galaxies RDA.
I like its minimalist design – it’s just five pieces and a couple of O-rings, which is ideal for cleaning it. The build quality is solid, especially for the price point. I’m not so thrilled that they went with a threaded top-fill system. I would have liked a slide-out top-fill or a quick-turn system like the one on the Siren 2 — c’mon guys, it’s 2018.
Airflow
The Galaxies’ airflow has two configuration wheels that are independently adjustable on both sides for eight possible settings. In addition, an airflow cube attaches to the deck and can be installed in four different ways, in order to achieve your desired amount of restriction.
The two airflow cubes provided give you four options to further customize your draw. The pre-installed one has a single 1.3 mm hole or two 1.1 mm holes. The other has a 1.6 mm hole or a wider slot that is 2.6 mm x 1.2 mm. Combined with the two side airflow wheels, you have a whole lotta airflow options!
The air is directed straight to the coil via the center of the cube. They’re calling it 360° airflow, which is hard to actually verify but sounds very cool.
Build deck
The Galaxies MTL RTA features a single-coil deck, similar to the ones of the Siren 2 and Merlin Mini MTL. It also uses a side-mounted screw configuration which is relatively easy to build on, unlike the top-mounted screws of the Galaxies RDA (which had its issues regarding wire trapping.) The cotton wicks tuck right into two wicking ports and rest just above two small holes where the e-juice is fed.
The box comes with everything you need to get down to business. Vapefly included a screwdriver, two pre-made 1.0-ohm (more like 0.8-ohm) coils and a few pads of organic cotton. Be sure to trim your leads very close or they can touch the chimney — this is pretty common on these types of tanks. They also advise you to never run it without the airflow cube installed, to prevent a short.
Performance
The throat hit on the Galaxies is sharp and satisfying. The vapor production is rather impressive too, even at low wattages with a 1.0-ohm coil installed. More importantly, the flavor is on point. In fact, it is slightly exceeding the performance of the Berserker Mini, which is already known to be a very flavorful device. It worked very well with nicotine salt though I’m currently using it with regular 3 mg e-juice – because the flavor is that good!
The adjustment wheel reminds me of changing the volume on an old-school radio and can take some time getting used to. It’s not so easy to read the numbers on it either. When adjusting on one side, be sure to not accidentally adjust it on the other — the wheel is rather loose, so be sure to check it every once in a while. With that said, the airflow system seems to be highly effective. I haven’t experienced any dry hits yet, just a warm and saturated MTL experience.
I was able to achieve a similar restriction to the smallest hole on the Nautilus 2 — although I did experience some slight whistling when going too tight. With the airflow completely open, using the widest airflow cube, it produces a nice airy MTL draw. Overall the tank performs like an old school MTL atomizer that also allows you to dial in a rather tight restrictive lung hit if you slipstream while inhaling.

Verdict
I commend Vapefly for trying something new, even if they didn’t completely nail it. I did experience slight whistling on a few of the tighter airflow configurations, and I would have liked for the adjustment wheel to click into place, or at least be harder to turn. I’m also not the biggest fan of the top-fill mechanism, but it is hard to complain when most tanks in the market still haven’t moved on from standard threaded top caps.
But despite its minor flaws. the Vapefly Galaxies RTA is definitely worth the money for an RTA with such great flavor and versatility. Just a few years ago, these features would have been impossible to find at this price without settling for a clone. But even with all those high quality, affordable tanks coming out lately, I’d easily recommend this one to everyone looking for some extra value in the MTL RTA department.
